Today I fished in down town Grand Rapids on the Grand River for about 4 hours, it was a nice sunny day and had to take a chance and get out of the house. I swung streamers on my two handed rod with one strike and zero fish landed. I have been messing around with tube flies and I am not sure if I have the hook configuration set up correctly. I hope you have a chance to get out soon and break up the winter duldrums.

If you can bare the cold windy nights...
Taneycomo is fishing at its best right now for this time off year...

Last night I got to the about 8:30pm and stayed till almost midnight.

When I got there the water look like it was going at 3 units.. So I started with the Midge/egg combo.. catching 9... took off the egg as the water really started to drop out and put on a gray sowbug....catching 12 more...

well the water had really dropped out by now and the wind picked up alittle more.. (just before 10pm)... I went up top to outlet 1 change rigs and started throw the PMS... with a few good hard strikes and no takes, I went to a smaller leech (something I been working on)..Light gray... and then it broke loose....

Fishing on a dead drift sinking it to the bottom, stripping it fast, stripping slow... no matter what kind of retrieve it was.. they hit it...
I even landing one as I was release a fish.. dropped the fly into the water and bam.. had another without even having to cast...

I did this from the lower part of outlet 1 all the way down the flats...
I lost count of the number.. well over 50....

What a Night!!!

Leonard

Me and my buddy fished the Rogue river yesterday for a few hours with bait. At one place we where able to stand on the ice to get a float in the only lane. It will be pretty difficult to fly fish when the river freezes. Hopefully that doesn't last too long. I see some fly tying in my future.

Just got back from an interesting 5 days with the Flygirls of Michigan, fishing some of my favorite waters.
It seems "early season" is slipping away with the warmer temps, this past week. Add to that the really dry conditions and you have the makings of a disaster ready to happen.
On Tuesday afternoon, two fires broke out. This is the view from Wa Wa Sum, where I was staying.

Those aren't clouds.

The fire is situated east side of the South Branch and towards Roscommon.

As of this evening (Friday) the fire is under control with 8800 acres burned or burning. The South Branch Mason Tract is now open to fishing. Current road closers can be seen here.

The fire was within a half mile of Fisherman's Chapel on the South Branch. We had to give up plans to fish the South Branch for the time being.

Main branch was fishing well. Best times were morning and sunset with some wonderful spinner falls happening late into the evening. Have a #12 Borchers and a #12 Roberts Drake in your vest along with the sulfurs and "popcorn" caddis. Dennis Potter's Opal X Caddis or Tan / Tan X Caddis worked most of the day and into the evening, just about everywhere. Lot's of stone flies about too. Yellow Bellied Mattress Thrashers, Olive Stones, Brown Stones and Little Yellow Stones. Bugs bugs everywhere.
