Fishing Report for December 17th, 2012

Madison River Dam: 1,150 cfs Kirby: 1,210 cfs We've been blessed with a lot of snow over the past week, and our snow pack is currently holding at 124% in the Madison Range.....Hopefully it keeps on dumping and we'll have plenty of water for the upcoming season.  Water temps are hovering around 35 degrees Between the Lakes and 35-37 degrees at the Kirby Gauge...not the best conditions for pitching streamers, but we're still getting a few on olive peanut envys, black tips up, and white silk kitties if you are still looking for a tug (and as stubborn as we [...]

Fishing Report for November 30th, 2012

Madison River Dam: 985 cfs Kirby: 1,050 cfs It's actually been quite pleasant on the Upper Madison for this late in the year, as temps continue to hover between the high 30's to low 40's.  We are still doing well with streamers both between the lakes and around Raynold's pass, but it should start to slow down once water temp drops another couple of degrees.  Nymph fishermen will do best on a variety of midge larva/pupa imitations and egg patterns.  An egg trailing a $3 dip is always a good standby, but black or brown rubber legs are also a [...]

Fishing Report for October 24th, 2012

Madison River Dam: 890 cfs Kirby: 959 cfs Varney: 1,080 cfs If you don't mind playing around in the snow, The Upper Madison is fishing well with nymphs and streamers.  Nymph anglers will do best with a variety of baetis nymphs and midge larva/pupa, as well as with black rubber legs, but you could have a BWO emergence any time between 11:00 and 2:00 so be sure to have some dries packed along with you if you plan on heading up this way.  Streamer fishing has been good up high, but make sure to slow down your retrieves a little [...]

Fishing Report for October 18th, 2012

Madison River Dam: 900 cfs Kirby: 937 cfs Varney: 1,060 cfs The last few days have been pretty windy over here, and it looks like we are in store for some more 20 mph+ afternoons through the weekend.  Nymphing small midges and baetis patterns remains your best option if you are looking for numbers, but dragging zonkers along the banks and inside seams can be a good option under the indicator too.  Streamer fishing has been a little more inconsistent, but we are still having some great days in the upper section when it hasn't been blowing too hard  Top [...]

Fishing Report for October 13th, 2012

Madison River Dam: 900 cfs Kirby: 948 cfs Varney: 1,080 cfs Sounded like it was a little tougher out on the river today, but the Madison has been fishing well this week. For the Dry/Nymph anglers looking to hit the wade section, you'll do best nymphing midges and baetis nymphs in the #18-20 range in the morning and afternoon, and some of our top producers have been small BWO Barr's Emergers, Triple-B Flashbacks, RS-2s, and black zebra midges.  Over the last few days we have started to see our larger BWOs emerge, and there have been decent numbers of small [...]

Fishing Report for October 8th, 2012

Madison River Dam: 910 cfs Kirby: 959 cfs Varney: 1,050 cfs The cold snap last Thursday made for some tough fishing over the next few days, particularly down by Ennis,  as water temps dropped between 6-8 degrees above their normal highs. Sunday was a different story though, and we saw more than a few bent rods from nymph, dry fly, and streamer fishermen in the wade section, so look for fishing to heat up again this week.  The forecast is calling for highs in the 60's with night-time lows hovering around 30 degrees, so it appears that a second wind [...]

Fishing Report for October 1st, 2012

Madison River Dam:  931 cfs Kirby: 948 cfs Varney: 1,060 cfs The nymph bite has been pretty impressive over the last three days on the Upper Madison, and we are soaking up the last warm rays of Indian Summer before the snow hits tomorrow night. Grey RS2s, BWO Barr's emergers, $3 dips, #18 silver lightening bugs, and black zebras midges have all been solid producers in the wade and float sections, and it should only get better when the temperatures drop on Wednesday morning.  Dry fly action (or what little there has been) should really start to pick up this [...]

Fishing Report for September 27th, 2012

Madison River Dam:  931 cfs Kirby: 971 cfs Varney: 1,060 cfs As far as nymphs and dries are concerned, its been more of the same on Upper Madison these days.  The dry bite has been tough both in the wade and float sections, and we are still waiting for some colder temps to come in next week and really get the baetis going.  That being said, the nymphing has been enough to keep us interested, and we've been doing best on $3 dips, baetis nymphs, black zebra midges, and various other midge larva/pupa around Raynolds and Three Dollar Bridge.  If [...]

Fishing Report for September 22nd, 2012

Madison River Dam: 942 cfs Kirby: 994 cfs Varney: 1,050 cfs Fishing has slowed down a little bit over the last four days, particularly with the streamer bite, and it seems we must wait again for colder temps to move in and stir the proverbial pot.  Don't get us wrong...You can still go out there and get some fish on bigger streamers, but it's not quite as hot and heavy as we saw the week before.  The Zonker/nymph rig is still the way to go in the morning below Lyons, but expect that to drop off around noon-thirty--We've been doing [...]

Fishing Report for September 17th, 2012

Madison River Dam: 953 cfs Kirby: 994 cfs Varney: 1,100 cfs As Fall  temperatures continue to keep water temps at more ideal levels, fishing has picked up throughout the Upper Madison.  We are starting to see our first waves of fish coming out of Ennis Lake, and even the resident browns have started to put on their Halloween costumes...good news for the streamer fishermen out there. We've been doing best on a variety of olive and black streamers such as butt monkeys, sex dungeons, and peanut envys in the morning and during periods of low light.  When the sun gets [...]
