Fishing Report for December 20th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 851 cfs Kirby: 914 cfs About the only thing that has changed from our last report is the lack of sub-zero temperatures out there.  That being said, the nymph fishing has been very good on the Upper Madison this week, and we are still getting fish on dries during the early afternoons...we haven't seen the full-on midge "explosion" yet, but that should get going here very shortly.  The usual fare of #18 $3 Dips, midge larva/pupa, Pat's Rubber Legs, Nuke Eggs, and baetis nymphs have been about all you need to know, and the traffic has been [...]

Fishing Report for December 5th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 749 cfs Kirby: 811 cfs The mercury has been falling drastically over the last few days, and with the local forecast calling for highs in the single digits to mid teens well into next week, there isn't a huge rush to get on the water before noon at the moment.   For the hard-cores out there, you'll pretty much have the whole river to yourself right now, and nymphs will be the name of the game-- The usual fare of midges, pat's rubber legs, nuke eggs, and $3 Dips will be more than enough to get you [...]

Fishing Report for November 21st, 2013

Madison River Dam: 767 cfs Kirby: 829 cfs It's been a lot more of the same on the Upper Madison this week-- Great nymphing with a nice window of dry fly fishing in the early afternoon.  Most of the baetis seem to be done for the year, but the midges have more than made up for it.  A well presented griffith's gnat or stillborne midge in size 20 seems to be the ticket right now, and we've been seeing the most surface activity between 12:30 and 3:00 p.m., depending on the day.  Nymph anglers will want to stick to the [...]

Fishing Report for November 13th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 776 cfs Kirby: 850 cfs The Madison Valley has been unseasonably warm over the last week, and the fishing has been just as hot. The wade section between Quake and Lyon's Bridge has been fishing very well with both nymphs, dries, and streamers.  Nymph fishermen have been doing well on smaller pat's rubber legs, midge larva/pupa, eggs, and baetis nymphs, but you may want to take the indicator off around 1:00 in the afternoon as fish have been podding up on midges in a big way.  This is some of the better midge fishing that we have [...]

Fishing Report for November 2nd, 2013

Madison River Dam: 785 cfs Kirby: 850 cfs Fishing has been very good throughout the Upper River this week.  Nymphs are still your best best for numbers, and we have had a lot of good reports on baetis nymphs/emergers, $3 Dips, Midges, and Pat's Rubber legs from customers over the last few days.  We have also been getting a lot of dry fly activity in the afternoons for the better part of a month now.  Most of the surface activity seems to be between 1:00-4:00 p.m., and fish have been rising steadily to both Pseudos and BWOs in the familiar [...]

Fishing Report for October 19th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 740 cfs Kirby: 809 cfs Varney: 891 cf One only needs to glance up at the snow covered peaks towering above the withering expanses of sage to understand why Fall is our favorite time of year in Southwest Montana.  Then again, big buttery brown trout chasing streamers and pods of rising fish tend to get the same point across.  We have had some gorgeous weather move in over the last couple of days, and it's supposed to continue through the middle of next week.  That being said, the Upper river has been fishing very well on all [...]

Fishing Report for October 10th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 740 cfs Kirby: 809 cfs Varney: 921 cfs The Madison has been fishing well this week, and both air and water temps have steadily increased after our first big snow storm on the 4th.  The river between Quake Lake and Lyon's Bridge seems to be producing the most consistent action with both nymphs and streamers, but we have also been getting some decent reports from the dry fly anglers out there.  You may run into a few of the #18-20 BWOs, but there have been far more Pseudos (Tiny Western Blue Winged Olive #22-24) riding the surface [...]

Fishing Report for September 30th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 740 cfs Kirby: 809 cfs Varney: 891 cfs "Wind" has been the word of the day for just over a week now on the Upper Madison, and pretty much throughout the entire region as far as we can tell.  Sustained 20-30 mph days with gusts between 40-50 mph have kept both bugs and anglers off the water, but the few people that have been out there have had it all to themselves.  And so it is that we enter the time of extremes...on the one hand you can go out there and have a great day nymphing [...]

Fishing Report for September 23rd, 2013

Madison River Dam: 749 cfs Kirby: 799 cfs Varney: 875 cfs Fishing continues to improve on the Upper Madison and I think it is pretty safe to say that Fall has officially made its presence known in this little corner of the world.  We are seeing good numbers of Pseudos and even a few larger BWOs when the wind hasn't been ripping them off the water, and we should start to see more in the way of fish actually podding up on them over the next week or so.  Streamer fishing has been great most mornings, but the 20-30 mph [...]

Fishing Report for September 12th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 749 cfs Kirby: 799 cfs Varney: 845 cfs With colder nights and thus colder water temperatures, things have been picking up on the river this week.  While nymphs are still the way to go if you are looking for numbers, we've been having better reports of dry fly fishing over the last few days.  That's not to say that you can go out there and rip 50 fish on hoppers right now, nor has it been a great hopper year in general, but the ant and attractor bite has been bringing more than a few good fish [...]
