Fishing Report for September 5th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 804 cfs Kirby: 903 cfs Varney: 1,000 cfs The Upper Madison continues to fish well with nymphs, but the dry fly bite is still a little too inconsistent to really excited about-- We have been taking some nice fish on hoppers and ants in the wade section, but there are a lot more lookers than takers on the hopper front. While we are still seeing good fish eating nocturnal stones below Lyon's Bridge, the action has started to slow down a bit more over the last few days and my guess is that most of them will be [...]

Fishing Report for August 26th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 921 cfs Kirby: 948 cfs Varney: 1,000 cfs The Upper Madison was a little rough last week if you were on the water between 10:00 a.m.. and 6:00 p.m.....not that it was awful by any means, but the better fish in the river made you work for it a little more than usual.  That being said, we received a small but welcome increase in flows out of the dam a few days ago, which should give these fish a little more freedom to disperse as they see fit.  There are still plenty of  Nocturnal stones below Lyon's [...]

Fishing Report for August 11th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 776 cfs Kirby: 819 cfs Varney: 875 cfs Fishing on the Upper Madison has been fairly steady over the last few days, and the extra cloud cover has been a big help in keeping water temperatures at more reasonable levels.  The wade section between Quake and Lyon's has been a relative ghost town as far as human traffic is concerned, so those of you looking for a little mid-summer solitude can actually find it on the Madison if you take a little walk up or down from your favorite access point.  We are still seeing decent numbers [...]

Fishing Report for August 6th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 776 cfs Kirby: 850 cfs Varney: 921 cfs The Upper Madison has still been fishing very well during the mornings and evenings, but the afternoons have been far more inconsistent.  If you plan on heading out there before sun-up, the nocturnal stone action has been very productive in bringing good fish up, and we've been doing best on chubby chernobyls, fat alberts, other assorted foam creatures.  We've also has some great mornings with streamers as well, and black boogie men, olive peanut envys, and barely legals have definitely been the way to go over the last few [...]

Fishing Report for July 27th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 1,140 cfs Kirby: 1,200 cfs Varney: 1,320 cfs Not much has changed on the Upper Madison since the last report, but we are definitely starting to see more in the way of Nocturnal stones and spruce moths below Lyon's Bridge.  That being said, the morning dry bite has still been good with chubbys, purple hazes, rusty spinners, and caddis all being good bets until the water warms up in the afternoon.  The morning streamer fishing has also been a good option over the last few days, with olive and black sculpin patterns and olive/white barely legals being [...]

Fishing Report for July 20th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 1,050 cfs Kirby: 1,180 cfs Varney: 1,390 cfs The Upper Madison is still a good bet right now, but the bite has started to slow down a bit after 2:00 p.m... especially up high.  For the dry fly guys out there, we are starting to see more and more nocturnal stone shucks showing up on the rocks below the West Fork Bridge every day now, and you will certainly see that number increasing ever steadily the farther one heads downstream.  We are also seeing good numbers of caddis popping in the morning, as well as Eperous, craneflies, [...]

Fishing Report for July 12th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 1,590 cfs Kirby: 1,640 cfs (and rising) Varney: 1,830 cfs CFS and Clarity Update:  There's some water in the ditch folks...flows continue to rise on the Upper Madison as PPL has been steadily pulsing the river over the last week.  We are currently holding at around 3 feet of green visibility, and while the dry fly fishing has certainly slowed down a bit we are still doing well on nymphs and streamers below the surface.  If you plan on heading up to the wade section be sure to grab a good supply of Pat's Rubber Legs, #12-16 [...]

Fishing Report for July 7th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 697 cfs Kirby: 914 cfs Varney: 1,200 cfs The Upper Madison is still fishing extremely well, and the increased flows have finally given some much needed breathing room to anglers and fish alike.  Salmonflies and Golden Stones are still thick above the West Fork, but we are starting to see fewer big bugs of the pteronarcys persuasion below Lyon's Bridge.  However, there are still plenty of goldens and yellow sallies to be found all the way down to Ruby Creek so don't give up on them quite yet.  We are still seeing TONS of caddis hatching in the [...]

Fishing Report for July 2nd, 2013

Madison River Dam: 402 cfs Kirby: 649 cfs Varney: 937 cfs It's still low out there, but the fishing has been more than enough to make up for it.  We now have salmonflies and golden stones scattered throughout the entire river, but the majority of the big bugs are now between Quake Lake and Ruby Creek...we've been seeing a few more below McAtee but I would concentrate up higher if you're looking to throw some big dries.  Caddis, PMDs, Epeorus, and yellow sallies have been all been riding the surface film enough to have fish looking up most of the [...]

Fishing Report for June 27th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 360 cfs Kirby: 650 cfs Varney: 1,030 cfs We are still running at very low flows for this time of year, but the river is fishing like a champ for the time being.  Salmonflies and golden stones are in full force below Palisades, but the bulk of the hatch seems to be from Ruby Creek down to Varney Bridge.  We are starting to see more and more shucks popping up below the West Fork, and we have even heard of some sightings around Raynolds and Three Dollar Bridge, but it's still not quite there...that will change very [...]
