Airflo kelly galloup shovelhead. A couple of years ago I was on the White river in Arkansas during one of the bigger water years that they had seen in recent history, which means an extra fifteen vertical feet of water was flowing along the banks. As a result, there were a lot of really big runs that needed longer casts in order to cover them thoroughly and I had to pay attention constantly in order to get the fly a little deeper in the water column in certain areas.  Because the water was so big I was taking extra time to fish runs and I was paying particular attention to the type of water that the fish were coming out of. The water was pretty clear and I could see the fly line while I watched my fly descend.  I noticed that the line always had a belly in it and that I was getting a considerable lag time between the fly and the bottom of the belly where the line would drag the fly to. As a result, I started splicing lines to make the tip sink first instead of last. I have to admit I was skeptical as to how it would cast at first but man was I wrong– It actually casts easier and faster than my original streamer max long.  Simply put, the Airflo Kelly Galloup shovelhead will jack huge flies out of the park with very minimal effort, and is the absolute perfect sinking line for fishing big flies in big water.  As most of you know, streamers just keep getting bigger and bigger which demands more from your fly line in order to carry them. I decided to do two different lines in the Airflo Kelly Galloup  shovelhead: the 280 grain and the 330 grain. Don’t let the line’s overall weights scare you. I run the 280 on  7 weights and really don’t feel like I am working as hard as I did with other lines 50 or 75 grains lighter, and I can roll it out and pick it up even easier. The 330 grain is reserved for 8 weight rods and above. With a lot of anglers going to 8 and 9 weights this line is perfect. In my 8 weight Bank robber. I really feel like I am throwing about a 250 when I put the 330 on. The ease of the roll, pick up, and the way the Airflo Kelly Galloup shovelhead shoots is truly remarkable, and is my new favorite sinking line on the planet.
