The Copper King is a cool little variation on the Copper John, with the added realism of a Spirit River Nymph Back over the wing case. This seems to work particularly well as a yellow sally nymph, but it also doubles as a great attractor. Available in size 16.
Joe Mitchell's Split Case PMD is a very interesting concept, and one that we've found to work extremely well during the early stages of a Pale Morning Dun emergence. As you can see from the picture, the wing case is split in the middle in order to expose a thin strip of yellow foam. This is done in order to represent the early emergence of the adult before it ascends towards the surface film, and the tungsten bead allows it to be suspended in the mid to upper water column when it is dropped off a dry fly. Available in size 16.
Trina's montana prince is a hybrid of the copper john and the rubber leg prince nymph. It features a brown and copper wire body, hares ear thorax, white goose boots, and two pairs of spanflex legs. This is a great general attractor as well as an effective small stonefly imitation. Color: Copper. Size 16.
This PMD emerger is tied on a size 20 3x long nymph hook, so the actual size is closer to an 18. It features a clear glass bead that imitates the air bubble that's formed when the adult PMD is breaking through its exoskeleton, can be used as a dropper or nymphed right along the bottom. Size 20.
This is a cool new pattern from our friends at Fulling Mill. The balloon hammer caddis is tied on a scud hook so the abdomen rides just below the surface film, while the deer hair wing and foam head keep it afloat. The body color is natural hare's ear it also features a bright green egg sac. Barbless.
This is a very buggy looking pattern with grizzly schlappen palmered around the thorax. The Big R Bug rides very low on the surface and is a great pattern for later on in the hatch when the fish have seen their fair share of more conventional patterns. Available in size 6.
The Conehead Barely Legal series has been one of the hottest selling streamers in the shop for over 4 years now, and this assortment comes with all six available colors in a Cliff Bugger Barn. Each CH Barely Legal Box comes with one of each of the following: Olive/White CH Barely Legal, Brown/Yellow CH Barely Legal, Olive/Yellow CH Barely Legal, Grey/White CH Barely Legal, Sculpin Olive/White Laser Legal, and one Sculpin Olive/Cream Laser Legal.
Fishing during a micro caddis hatch can be awfully frustrating...mostly due to the fact that it is extremely difficult to discern your fly from all the naturals on the water. Swisher's black dancing caddis has a white poly parachute that makes it easier to find your needle in the haystack. Available in Size 20.$2.25 Add to cart
The ultra caddis is a simple yet effective caddis pupa imitation that works well when fished at multiple depths as well as in the surface film. This has been a great fly for us when our smaller caddis flies begin to hatch in late July and August on the Madison. Size 16.
We purchased this pattern for our PMD hatches, but it is a little smaller than the natural pale morning duns that we have in southwest Montana. However, this is a great choice for smaller mayflies with light-colored bodies. The orange foam post make this pattern extremely visible on the water, and the biot body throws off a great profile. Size 18. (somewhere between a #18 and a #20)
The fly formerly known as prince features a new twist on an old standby. The only difference between this pattern and a standard beadhead prince nymph is the wing, which replaces traditional goose biots with that of holographic tinsel. The fly formerly known as prince has been a life saver for us on those days when fish don't seem to be eating anything in particular, and is one of our favorite attractor nymphs on the Madison. Available in size 16.
What can you say about Mike Mercer's Micro Mayfly that hasn't been said before? This is just one of those bugs that you have to have a couple different sizes and colors of at all times. The olive micro mayfly has been one of our most consistent baetis patterns for years now. Available in Size 16-20.
Kelly's Mini Dungeon has been one of the hottest streamers in the bins this season. The Mini Dungeon Box includes all 7 colors of this bite-sized, fish-catching machine in one of our favorite streamer fly boxes around-- The Bugger Barn from Cliff Outdoors.
Back for another year, The Meat Locker contains 12 articulated streamers that John never leaves home without. Each Meat Locker comes with a Cliff Bugger Beast box and includes one of the following: 1 Natural Triple Dungeon, 1 Yellow Sex Dungeon, 1 Natural #6 Nancy P., 1 Gray/White Kill Whitey, 1 Olive/Yellow Mini Drunk and Disorderly, 1 White Kill Whitey, 1 Black Sex Dungeon, 1 Olive Boogie Man, 1 Black/Olive (silver body) Double Screamer, 1 Big Hole Bug, 1 Olive/White CH Barely Legal, and 1 Olive Peanut Envy.
This purple haze cripple was originally tied over on the Big Hole River, but seems to work just about everywhere trout like purple...which is just about every piece of water we know of. This pattern is tied last chance style and features a purple Z-Lon shuck and dubbed body, grizzly hackle, and a deer hair wing. This is a great general purpose emerger that can be fished during a variety of different mayfly hatches.
Jake's Hot Cake Salmonfly was developed by MFC national sales manager Jake Chutz when he was guiding on the Madison and Henry's Fork drainages. This has been a great pattern for us later in the hatch when trout seem to key in on smaller patterns, and casts a great profile for the smaller males. Available in size 6.
The Madison streamer box includes our top 8 articulated patterns for the Madison River. Day in and day out, these are the most consistent producers for Kelly and his guide staff, and come in a Bugger Barn from Cliff Outdoors.
