The Stimulator a is a favorite for us on the Madison whether we are fishing stoneflies, caddis, or terrestrials. This has been a staple dry fly pattern in the boxes of untold amounts of anglers, and we see no reason that should change any time soon. Colors: yellow, olive, and royal.$2.25 Select options
Jake's Hot Cake Salmonfly was developed by MFC national sales manager Jake Chutz when he was guiding on the Madison and Henry's Fork drainages. This has been a great pattern for us later in the hatch when trout seem to key in on smaller patterns, and casts a great profile for the smaller males. Available in size 6.
Slattery's OD Stimulator comes to us from our neighbor and Campfire Lodge owner, Jim Slattery. The OD stands for original design, and Jim maintains that he came up with this pattern in 1980 before Randal Kaufman was given credit. Slattery's OD Stimulator varies slightly from other commercially tied stimulators, in that it features longer hackle to improve floatability, and a longer dubbed head to more accurately imitate the natural adult stonefly. Also worth noting is that the size 4 is closer to that of a size 6 and the size 6 is closer to that of a size 8. The Salmonfly variation is on sale while they last.$1.25 – $2.50 Select options
Rainy's cat puke golden stone has been one of our top golden stonefly imitations on the Madison over the last eight years. It has everything a good stonefly imitation should have--It floats well, rides low, is highly visible, presents a good underwater profile, and can take a beating. Available in Sizes 6-8.$3.00 Select options
Kurt's egg drop stone was a killer stonefly imitation for us on the Madison last year, and our only regret is that we didn't order more. This pattern features a foam body, thin rubber legs, and just the right color of orange dubbing. The gray wing matches the natural color found on most adult stoneflies, and gives this fly the same buoyancy and visibility as the popular chubby chernobyl. The other cool thing about this bug is that it is tied on a stimulator hook, which allows the abdomen and black ice dub egg sac to dip just below the surface, just like the natural egg laying females. Available in size 6.$3.00 Add to cart
Rainy's cat puke might be the best natural or crippled salmon fly ever developed by human hands. From Rock Creek to the Madison, it has landed some of the biggest trout where pteronarcys californica are present. We use the black cat puke almost exclusively once the sun is off the water.$3.00 Select options
Will Dornan's water walker has been one of our better stonefly imitations for the last several years. The foam body and wing ensure that this fly floats like a cork and the rubber legs are perfectly placed to make this fly come alive in the water.$2.50 Select options
Sometimes simplicity works out in your favor. Nothing about the working girl is very radical, but trout tear it to pieces when the yellow sallies are out. The spun deer hair head and two pairs of rubberlegs also give this little girl a lot more floatation than you might think. Available in size 16.$2.25 Add to cart
This is not your traditional yellow sally pattern, but I think that's why it is such a great producer for us on the Madison. Larimeer's Yellow Sally featured a pale yellow body palmered with white hackle, tan spanflex legs, and a pink foam butt...and no, that is not a typo. We're not sure if the pink acts as a trigger for these fish, but we can tell you with absolute certainty that they will destroy this fly when yellow sallies are on the water.$2.25 Select options
Demoe's Mill Creek Golden was a great golden stonefly pattern for us on the Madison last Summer. It features a dubbed underbody, foam head, plenty of rubber legs, and a deer hair wing. One thing we love about this fly is that the body color is sort of a hybrid between a golden stone and a salmon fly, and can pass for either when both species are on the water. Demoe's Mill Creek Golden is available in size 10.$2.50 Add to cart
Cheech's Grumpy Frumpy has been a great little attractor pattern on the Madison over the last few years. The yellow grumpy frumpy works wonders as a yellow sally imitation too. Color: Yellow, Purple, Peacock/Chartreuse. Available in size 16.$2.25 Select options
This may come as a surprise, but Willy's Ant was the fly that inspired the infamous chubby chernobyl. The only difference is that this fly only has one poly wing, whereas standard chubby chernobyl has two. We stock Willy's Ant with a white body so that you can make it any color you want with a touch of permanent marker (although the white by itself works great too). Available in size 10.
Perry's Nightmare has been a great pattern for us on the Yellowstone, Big Hole, and the Jefferson rivers when faced with low light conditions. The peacock and krystal flash wing give it a lot of attention, and we have found this to be a great nocturnal stonefly imitation for us early in the morning and at night. Available in Size 8.$2.25 Add to cart
What makes the Thing from Uranus so effective is that it rides very low on the water, just as the naturals do. This pattern is also extremely hard to sink, even when you're running a heavy dropper such as a Pat's Rubber Legs. Sizes: 6, 10, 12.$2.50 Select options
This fly has been around for a number of years now, and it continues to prove itself season after season. The 1/2 down is tied so that the abdomen and egg sac sit below the surface, while the deer-hair wing and parachute post keep the thorax riding flush in the film. Available in Size 6$2.50 Add to cart
This is a very buggy looking pattern with grizzly schlappen palmered around the thorax. The Big R Bug rides very low on the surface and is a great pattern for later on in the hatch when the fish have seen their fair share of more conventional patterns. Available in size 6.
Galloup's goober sally is another offshoot of Kelly's goober caddis, and tied with the same slim proportions. It features a little darker body than most commercially tied yellow sally adults, 99% of which are tied with the same bright yellow body across the board. Truth be told, there are approximately 60 species of yellow sallies throughout the country and their actual body color can vary a great deal from species to species. The body color of the goober sally is right in the middle of the color spectrum, and one that we've found to be extremely effective around the waters of southwest Montana. Like the goober midge, this pattern features two strands of 1/69" lateral scale underneath the deer hair wing, which we've found to be a major trigger in imitating the fluttering wings of an adult insect. Available in size 16.$2.25 Add to cart
Gould's half down golden stone has been around for a number of years now, and it continues to prove itself season after season. The half down is tied so that the abdomen and egg sac sit below the surface, while the deer-hair wing and parachute post keep the thorax riding flush in the film. Gould's half down golden stone is available in Size 8 and 10.$2.50 Select options
The micro gold member is a small foam creation from the mind of Will Dornan. We have used these as attractors, terrestrials, and yellow sally imitations and the foam body and razor foam wing keep this fly floating like a cork throughout most of the day.$2.25 Select options
