Goddard Caddis

British fly tyers John Goddard and Clive Henry created the Goddard Caddis back in the early 1960’s for lakes and stillwater fishing, and it eventually found its way to the states around ten years later.  This is one of our favorite patterns for skittering across lakes because it is very difficult to sink and has a very realistic silhouette to the fish looking for egg-laying females from below.

Description

British fly tyers John Goddard and Clive Henry created the goddard caddis back in the early 1960’s for lakes and stillwater fishing, and it eventually found its way to the states around ten years later.  This is one of our favorite patterns for skittering across lakes because it is very difficult to sink and has a very realistic silhouette to the fish looking for egg-laying females from below.  The goddard caddis features a spun deer hair body and several turns of brown hackle from the thorax to the hook eye, making it a perfect caddis imitation to throw in faster currents like we fish on the Madison and Gallatin rivers.  The antennae were originally tied with stripped hackle stems, but it many commercial fly tying companies have made the switch to 1-2 lb maxima chameleon like you see in the picture of the natural variation.  In summary, the goddard caddis deserves a few slots in every angler’s caddis box and we carry this time-tested pattern in sizes 14 and 16.
