This purple haze cripple was originally tied over on the Big Hole River, but seems to work just about everywhere trout like purple...which is just about every piece of water we know of. This pattern is tied last chance style and features a purple Z-Lon shuck and dubbed body, grizzly hackle, and a deer hair wing. This is a great general purpose emerger that can be fished during a variety of different mayfly hatches.
This pattern was developed by Jake Chutz of Montana Fly Company to imitate callibaetis duns on Hebgen Lake. The synthetic wing is tied para wulff style, with a small orange indicator nestled in between the posts for easy detection on the water. Available in size 14.$2.25 Add to cart
The Copper King is a cool little variation on the Copper John, with the added realism of a Spirit River Nymph Back over the wing case. This seems to work particularly well as a yellow sally nymph, but it also doubles as a great attractor. Available in size 16.
The Found Link is Kelly's version of Mike Mercer's Missing Link, and has been a great pattern for us on the Madison over the last two years. This pattern is commonly referred to as a cross-dresser because it can be used to imitate mayflies as well as spent caddis. The natural version has a deer hair body, while the BWO and PMD varieties have a biot body, and both feature a pair of spent Z-Lon wings.$2.25 Select options
The Madison streamer box includes our top 8 articulated patterns for the Madison River. Day in and day out, these are the most consistent producers for Kelly and his guide staff, and come in a Bugger Barn from Cliff Outdoors. Each box includes one of the following: Olive/White CH Barely Legal, Olive Peanut Envy, Black/Olive Double Screamer (Gold Body), Natural Trevor's Sculpin, Olive Mike's Pecs, Golden Brown Mike's Pecs, White Silk Kitty, and a Black Sex Dungeon.
This is a cool new pattern from our friends at Fulling Mill. The balloon hammer caddis is tied on a scud hook so the abdomen rides just below the surface film, while the deer hair wing and foam head keep it afloat. The body color is natural hare's ear it also features a bright green egg sac. Barbless.
You might have been fishing a hatch where trout are rising everywhere, but refuse your fly over and over again. These fish are usually weeding out the weakest of the group-- Cripples. Anybody who has read Kelly's book Cripples and Spinners knows how important this stage in the hatch is, and galloup's cripple has proven itself time and time again on rivers and spring creeks across the country. What makes this pattern so different than others is that the hook shank is bent in such a way as to imitate a crippled natural, and the wing is pulled over so it lays flat on the water. Colors: PMD, BWO & Callabaetis.$2.50 Select options
The Humpy is a true classic that has its origins in the American West somewhere in the 1940's. The deer hair body and heavily hackled thorax make this an extremely buoyant general mayfly and attractor pattern that floats like a cork and still fools fish to this day. Available in size 14.$2.25 Select options
The compara spinner was created by combining two of Dave Ellis's patterns- The Triple wing spinner and the Hi-viz Compara dun. I found that I was having trouble keeping an eye on the low riding spinners so I dropped a wing off the triple-wing spinner and added the Hi-Vis compara wing to the front of the fly. The fish see the shape of a spinner and you see the wing as well. Colors. PMD & BWO. Available in Sizes 16-20.$2.25 Select options
Clarence Roberts is the originator of this fly and a whole series of flies called the Robert's Drake series. The Roberts Yellow Drake is the most famous of all his patterns. This has been one of our top searching patterns on the Madison, and we use it in sizes 16 and 18 to represent Epeorus and PMD duns. Available in #14-18.$2.25 Select options
The Drop Arse Spinner was another new fly for 2016, and one that we will definitely be re-stocking for a long time. This rusty spinner is tied on a curved nymph hook so that the abdomen dips just below the surface, while the CDC wing and hi-viz foam wing case keep it afloat. This is a great pattern for techy dry fly guys out there, and was one of our best spinners on the Madison last year. Barbless.$2.25 Select options
Another highly effective variation of the DOA series from Rowan Nyman, this Green Drake Cripple is a staple for us on the waters around SW Montana and Yellowstone National Park. To be clear, this is a Western Green Drake imitation which is considerably smaller than its Eastern cousin. It features a Z-Yarn trailing shuck, dubbed body, a few turns of olive grizzly hackle , and a synthetic dun colored wing. Available in size 12.$2.25 Read more
This is a great all around mayfly pattern, especially on faster moving waters where you need something that will stay afloat without sacrificing a genuine profile. With its deer hair body and post, the AP Mayfly does exactly that. Available in sizes 14-16.$2.25 Select options
The parachute callibaetis is a close cousin of the parachute adams, but with two tails and a partridge post instead of calf tail. This fly has been one of our go-to callibaetis patterns on both Quake and Hebgen Lakes for years now. Available in size 14.$2.25 Add to cart
Nyman's DOA Cripple PMD is another simple yet highly effective pattern that floats well and is very easy to see. This has been one of our most productive PMD patterns on the waters around Southwest Montana for years now, and a favorite of our guide staff. Size 16.$2.25 Add to cart
Trina's montana prince is a hybrid of the copper john and the rubber leg prince nymph. It features a brown and copper wire body, hares ear thorax, white goose boots, and two pairs of spanflex legs. This is a great general attractor as well as an effective small stonefly imitation. Color: Copper. Size 16.
I designed this hook and fly over fifteen years ago, but we only brought it to market about ten years back. This fly was designed to imitate the natural posture of an adult dun and to always keep the wing in the perfect position. Color: Olive. Available in Sizes 16-18.$2.25 Select options
Jake's wet body spinner is perfect for medium size callibaetis spinners on rivers and lakes alike. It features a body wrapped with grey midge tubing, a dun colored synthetic wing, and a few turns of hackle trimmed neatly on the bottom so that the fly sits flush on the surface film. Just like his Hebgen Dun, Jake added a small orange post between the wings for easy strike detection and we think this pattern will be a killer callibaetis spinner on our surrounding lakes this season. Available in size 16.$2.25 Add to cart
The Conehead Barely Legal series has been one of the hottest selling streamers in the shop for over 4 years now, and this assortment comes with all six available colors in a Cliff Bugger Barn. Fishing during a micro caddis hatch can be awfully frustrating...mostly due to the fact that it is extremely difficult to discern your fly from all the naturals on the water. Swisher's black dancing caddis has a white poly parachute that makes it easier to find your needle in the haystack. Available in Size 20.$2.25 Add to cart
The parachute adams is still one of the best searching patterns in all of fly fishing as well as one of the best general mayfly imitations that we have ever fished. From blue wing olives to callibaetis, this fly continues to fool picky trout all across the world. Our parachute adams are tied with a calf tail post, and are available in sizes 10-20.$2.25 Select options
