Madison River Fishing Report for October 24th, 2022

Dam: 658 cfs

Kirby: 788 cfs

Varney: 1,040 cfs

After one of most glorious Fall weather patterns we have experienced in recent memory, old man winter finally showed up and blanketed the mountains with a hefty dose of reality.  Most of SW Montana received a good amount of snow in the mountains over the weekend, and it looks like we’ve seen the last of 70 degree afternoons until this coming Spring.  That said, fishing has been good on the Upper Madison over the last two weeks and the streamer fishing has finally started to improve as well.

Madison River Fishing Report for September 14th, 2022

Dam: 834 cfs

Kirby: 875 cfs

Varney: 1,040 cfs

After six weeks of intense heat we are finally getting some relief from the sun throughout SW Montana, and some good old-fashioned Fall weather has finally settled into the Madison Valley.  The forecast is calling for highs in the 60’s with a good chance of showers every day for the next week, and these sustained low-pressure fronts are always good for fishing.  We have already started to see decent numbers of Blue Winged Olives and the streamer fishing has improved with the cooler nights and cloud cover.

Madison River Fishing Report for September 1st, 2022

Dam: 1,010 cfs

Kirby: 1,160 cfs

Varney: 1,290 cfs

Fishing on the Upper Madison has improved over the last week due to cooler air and thus cooler water temperatures, but we have another week of hot weather coming our way according to the forecast.  We are looking at highs in the low to mid 90’s through early next week so you’ll want to get on the water early as the fishing will get pretty tough around 3:00 pm until we start getting some colder nights again.  The good news is that we received another 150 cfs out of the dam this week, so flows on the Madison are still in great shape heading into September.

Madison River Fishing Report for August 16th, 2022

Dam: 1,050 cfs

Kirby: 1,170 cfs

Varney: 1,330 cfs

Fishing has improved a little since our last report but it has still been fairly inconsistent this week.  Early morning streamer fishing and terrestrial fishing between noon and 2:00 pm have been the only consistent ways of getting quality fish in the boat, although some days the nymph bite has been good enough to save the day as well.  With the mercury still rising into the high 80’s and 90’s it has been difficult on all fronts after 3:30 – 4:00 p.m., so you best bet is still to get your fishing in during the morning and early afternoon hours and then head back out later in the evening.

Madison River Fishing Report for August 6th, 2022

Dam: 1,290 cfs

Kirby: 1,430 cfs

Varney: 1,640 cfs

Its been a tough bite on the Upper Madison this week.  There have been periods of good dry fly fishing, streamer fishing, and nymph fishing but it has been all over the place for the most part.  Early mornings have been the most consistent with streamers and nocturnal stones, but afternoons have been fairly unproductive due to warm water temperatures and plenty of wind.  Also worth noting is that the section between 8 Mile Ford and Ennis Lake is on Hoot Owl Restrictions as of August 2nd, meaning that it is closed to fishing between 2:00 pm and midnight.  The entire river upstream from 8 Mile is still fishable all day. The rain and colder temperatures over the two days have certainly helped, as the streamer bite yesterday and today was fantastic, and we should start to see fishing improve here again shortly.

Madison River Fishing Report for July 29th, 2022

Dam: 1,050 cfs

Kirby: 1,240 cfs

Varney: 1,430 cfs

It’s been a hot one out there over the last week, but the Upper Madison continues to hold its own.  We are still looking at highs in the low to mid 90’s through Monday, but colder nights and highs in the low 80’s are just around the corner starting on Tuesday.  Water levels at both the Kirby and Varney gauges are in great shape for the last week in July, and with Hebgen reservoir just under 97% of full pool things are looking good as we head into August.

Madison River Fishing Report for July 21st, 2022

Dam: 1,060 cfs

Kirby: 1,260 cfs

Varney: 1,560 cfs

The Upper Madison is still fishing well with dries and nymphs and we are starting to see some better streamer fishing on the lower parts of the river.  Warmer temperatures and bright sun have made some afternoons a little tough, but we are still getting in some great fishing throughout the morning, early afternoon, and evening hours.  The forecast is calling for highs in the mid to high 80’s through next week, so feel free to take a break from the afternoon heat and head back out around 7:00 pm for the evening caddis hatch.
