Fishing Report for February 26th, 2013

Madison River Dam:  1,010 cfs Kirby: 1,130 cfs I suppose these reports are getting a little repetitive, but the dry fly action continues to produce consistent numbers of browns and rainbows throughout the wade section, and the nymph bite is just as good if not better.  The most effective patterns have been  #18-20 Griffith's gnats and Kelly's new Goober midge, but we're 99.9% positive that they aren't the only ones working out there for anglers--John's black Three Dollar Crip was also effective when fished in the film, and we've heard of other gray or black midge imitations taking good numbers [...]

Fishing Report for February 18th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 1,030 cfs Kirby: 1,110 cfs Kelly and I headed down river today around the West Fork, but 10-15 mph winds made the dry fly fishing a little tough as all the midges were getting blown off the water and no heads were poking up.  Time for plan B.  We headed back above Raynolds, and while there were plenty of midges on the water we saw very few trout willing to rise to them.  Time for plan C.  We went upstream a couple hundred more yards and there they were--Lots of heads up on midge clusters and adults, [...]

Fishing Report for February 17th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 1,030 cfs Kirby: 1,110 cfs Well the sun didn’t come out until I was walking back to the house but no matter, there were heads everywhere I went, and they were eating every bug they saw...including mine. Clusters, singles, doubles they were eating them all. As usual this time of year, the fish are pretty happy to eat and it is more about a good drift than anything else. More stalk and less cast is a good idea this time of year, or really any time of year. You can get pretty close if you use just [...]

Fishing Report for February 6th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 1,060 cfs Kirby: 1,110 cfs      It's been more of the same on the Upper Madison these days, with very little pressure and lots of fish to be had.  There were four cars down at Raynold's Bridge and two cars parked at the Three Dollar entrance, so we headed down to Pine Butte and caught a pile of nice browns and rainbows on Three dollar dips and #18 BH hares ears. Once it seemed like the fish were getting wise to our presence, we drove back over to Raynolds and fished some of the deeper slicks out [...]
