Fishing Report for February 24th, 2015

Madison River Dam: 841 cfs Kirby: 860 cfs Well we knew the 40-50 degree highs in February couldn't last forever, and it looks like old man Winter has finally settled back in to this little corner of the world.  As a reminder, the Upper Madison between Quake Lake and McAtee Bridge and Ennis Bridge to Ennis Lake closes to all fishing starting on March 1st, so Saturday will be your last chance to fish these stretches until the general opener on May 16th.  Despite the cold weather, fishing has been very good throughout the Upper River and nymphs such as [...]

Fishing Report for February 11th, 2015

Madison River Dam: 921 cfs Kirby: 959 cfs It's been more of the same on the Upper Madison this week, with unseasonably high temperatures making for very pleasant fishing conditions.  The nymph bite is still holding steady with midge larva and pupa imitations such as zebras and #18 $3 Dips doing the most damage.  Smaller Pat's Rubber Legs in black have been good choices throughout the Upper River in addition to Iron and Tungsten Sallies in #16 as well.  The dry fly fishing has continued to hold its own between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. when the wind holds off [...]

Fishing Report for January 26th, 2015

Madison River Dam: 974 cfs Kirby: 1,030 cfs The sub-par dry fly fishing that we described in our last report has improved with leaps and bounds over the last week, and fish have been eating midges like a champ when the wind hasn't been ripping them off the water.  Stillborn midges, Goober midges, Griffith's Gnats, and Black or Gray CDC midges have all been taking good fish in the slower moving slicks and edges of the Upper Madison, and the majority of the hatch has been taking place been between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m..  The nymph bite is still [...]

Fishing Report for January 2nd, 2015

Madison River Dam: 996 cfs Kirby: 1,090 cfs After a very intense cold front over the Holidays, temperatures are climbing to more tolerable levels and fishing has been good on the Upper River.  Midges, Pat's Rubber Legs, Olive Hare's Ears in #18-20, and #18 $3 Dips are still the way to go under the indicator and we are starting to see more adult midges popping every day.  The wind situation hasn't helped the dry fly fishing, but we should really start to get going soon with the warmer temps heading our way next week.  The river is still a little [...]

Fishing Report for December 4th, 2014

Madison River Dam: 900 cfs Kirby: 994 cfs With the deep freeze relinquishing its grasp on the Greater Yellowstone Region over the last few days, it has been downright pleasant to be on the Upper Madison this week.  The nymph fishing between Quake and Lyon's Bridge has continued to offer up the most consistent action, and midges are definitely the way to go.  While larger patterns such as Pat's Rubber Legs, San Juan Worms, and Zonkers are always a good option, we seem to be doing best on black zebra midges, #18 $3 Dips, and other various midge imitations.  There [...]

Fishing Report for March 3rd, 2014

Madison River Dam: 794 cfs Kirby: 839 cfs Varney: 875 cfs      The Upper Madison is closed to fishing from Quake Lake to McAtee Bridge as well as from Ennis Bridge to Ennis Lake until May 17th.  The sections that are currently open to fishing are the Madison between Hebgen Dam and Quake Lake and between McAtee Bridge and Ennis Bridge. With another great Winter Season behind us, your options will be pretty limited on the Upper Madison until the general opener on May 17th.  Mac to town is pretty much a slush party for the time being, so [...]

Fishing Report for January 28th, 2014

Madison River Dam: 813 cfs The repetition continues...The Upper Madison is still fishing extremely well with nymphs throughout the day, and the late morning-early afternoon midge activity has continued to produce incredible dry fly fishing.  Make sure you check the forecast if you are coming over to look for heads, as 15-20 mph winds can put an end to any sort of surface feeding pretty quickly.  Also worth mentioning is that with the lack of snow we've been experiencing over the past two weeks, most of the boat ramps in the upper section are still accessible...we actually did a quick float [...]

Fishing Report for January 15th, 2014

Madison River Dam: 822 cfs Kirby: 860 cfs Steady as she goes...The Upper Madison continues to fish well with nymphs throughout the day, and the midge activity has been good to outstanding for the dry fly enthusiasts during the late morning to early afternoon hours.  Small Hares Ears, #18 $3 Dips, #8-10 Pat's Rubber Legs, and various midge pupa/larva are all good bets under the indicator right now, but as most of the experienced winter anglers know, its generally more about finding the fish this time of year rather than a specific pattern-- Focus your efforts on the deeper holes, [...]

Fishing Report for December 20th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 851 cfs Kirby: 914 cfs About the only thing that has changed from our last report is the lack of sub-zero temperatures out there.  That being said, the nymph fishing has been very good on the Upper Madison this week, and we are still getting fish on dries during the early afternoons...we haven't seen the full-on midge "explosion" yet, but that should get going here very shortly.  The usual fare of #18 $3 Dips, midge larva/pupa, Pat's Rubber Legs, Nuke Eggs, and baetis nymphs have been about all you need to know, and the traffic has been [...]

Fishing Report for March 12th, 2013

Madison River Dam: 974 cfs Kirby: 1,090 cfs Varney: 1,180 cfs As most of you know, the section between Quake Lake and McAtee Bridge is closed until May 18th (as is Ennis Bridge to Ennis Lake), so we've been heading up between the lakes over the last week.  Rainbows are just starting to trickle in from Quake, but they should really start to get moving over the next couple of weeks.  It's actually an easy to walk down to the lake right now, as snowmobiles have packed the road down enough so that you aren't sinking up to your waist [...]
