Fishing Report for May 28th, 2014

Madison River Dam: 1,910 cfs Kirby: 2,930 cfs Varney: 4,670 cfs The plug of mud that had been creeping closer toward the outlet of Quake finally made it to the river, and we are now at 4-6" of visibility and just under 3,000 cfs at the Kirby Gauge.  The streamer bite has definitely slowed down since the mud hit, but the nymph fishing is still producing good numbers of quality fish throughout the wade section.  Pink, purple, and brown San Juans, Black and Olive Pat's Rubber Legs, lightning bugs, shop vacs, hares ears and other baetis nymphs have been the [...]

Fishing Report for May 25th, 2004

Madison River Dam: 1,820 cfs Hebgen: 2,700 cfs Varney: 4,050 cfs The Upper Madison is still on the rise, but the sub-surface fishing has been incredible.  All the creeks are kicking in mud, and Cabin and Beaver have been putting in enough to turn Quake Lake into a bucket of Hershey's Syrup for the time being.  The visibility out back was roughly 8-10" this morning, but we are guessing that it will be cut in half by Tuesday at the latest.  That being said, the streamer fishing as well as the nymphing continue to impress even the most suspicious anglers...just [...]

Fishing Report for May 18th, 2014

Madison River Dam: 1,680 cfs Kirby: 2,130 cfs Varney: 2,620 cfs Up she goes...Both Cabin and Beaver Creeks have doubled their output over the last two days and there is a lot more heading our way.  The mud should make it through Quake by late next week, but it is still gin clear above Kirby for the time being.  Speaking of mud, the West Fork FINALLY blew out yesterday, and is putting in a pretty sizable stripe below Lyon's Bridge.  That being said, the nymph bite is still good down there, but we had some mixed reports from the streamer [...]

Fishing Report for May 16th, 2014

Madison River Dam: 1,650 cfs Kirby: 1,810 cfs Varney: 2,070 cfs With highs in the sixties and plenty of water, the Upper Madison is in prime shape for the opener tomorrow.  With the exception of Cabin and Beaver, all the creeks are running clear and the river down by Ennis has even lost its green tinge from last week.   The forecast is calling for a 40-60% chance of showers through tuesday, so we'll see how long this lasts, but conditions are absolutely perfect for the time being. As far as fly selection is concerned, it is usually more about [...]

Fishing Report for May 5th, 2014

Madison River Dam:  1,790 cfs Kirby: 1,930 cfs Varney: 2,280 cfs      THE UPPER MADISON IS CLOSED TO FISHING FROM QUAKE LAKE TO MCATEE BRIDGE AS WELL AS FROM ENNIS BRIDGE TO ENNIS LAKE UNTIL MAY 17TH.  THE SECTIONS THAT ARE CURRENTLY OPEN TO FISHING ARE THE MADISON BETWEEN HEBGEN DAM AND QUAKE LAKE AND BETWEEN MCATEE BRIDGE AND ENNIS BRIDGE. The Upper Madison is still fishing very well both between the lakes and below McAtee Bridge.  I wouldn't call it as red hot as what we experienced during the month of April, but it is still one of [...]
