Along with the trusty Hare’s Ear, this maybe one of the most effective nymph patterns ever developed, and is certainly one of the most imitated by fly tyers. The beadhead flashback pheasant tail features a pheasant tail tail and body, copper rib, and a single strand of pearl flashabou the runs the entire length of the body to the wing case. We are still waiting for the day that they stop eating these things, but honestly I don’t think it is possible. We use it in size 12 and 14 for green drake and march brown nymphs, size 16 for Epeorus and PMDs, and size 18 for Blue Wing Olives. Simply put, the beadhead flashback pheasant tail is still one best mayfly nymphs on the planet.
