Schultz’s Swinging D
Schultz’s Swinging D comes to us from Mike Schultz of Ypsilanti, Michigan. Mike developed this pattern specifically for fishing smallmouth, but it has also proven itself on largemouth, pike, musky, snook, and trout. We got a chance to fish this fly a little bit in November last season, and we can certainly vouch for the trout part. The swinging d has an unpredictable and erratic action when fished in combination with your favorite sinking line, largely due to the rainy’s foam diver head and the articulated body. Twitch it, burn it, or fish it as a suspension style fly– You really can’t go wrong with this one, but we are particularly fond of the dying drift you get from the buoyancy of the diver head when it is paused. The swinging d also features a healthy amount of flash, and the pearl mirage flashabou and UV barred predator wrap make this pattern glow like a lantern in the water. Add a glass rattle behind the head, a few plumes of marabou, a pair of grizzly hackles down the side, and a small deceiver style tail and you’ve got a recipe for a predator magnet. Schultz’s swinging d is available in white and olive/white and comes in a standard size 2.
