Fishing Report for April 7th, 2015

Madison River Dam: 671 cfs Kirby: 780 cfs Varney: 921 cfs JUST A REMINDER THAT THE UPPER MADISON BETWEEN QUAKE LAKE AND MCATEE BRIDGE AS WELL AS FROM ENNIS BRIDGE TO ENNIS LAKE IS CLOSED TO ALL FISHING UNTIL MAY 16TH. The Upper Madison is still fishing very well with nymphs from McAtee down to Ennis Bridge as well as between the lakes.  On a quick Varney to 8 Mile over the weekend, we started with an Oregon cheese nuke egg trailing a Galloup BWO nymph in size 18 and never took it off.  Although there wasn't much in the [...]

Fishing Report for March 25th, 2015

Madison River Dam: 663 cfs Kirby: 741 cfs Varney: 906 cfs JUST A REMINDER THAT THE UPPER MADISON BETWEEN QUAKE LAKE AND MCATEE BRIDGE AS WELL AS FROM ENNIS BRIDGE TO ENNIS LAKE IS CLOSED TO ALL FISHING UNTIL MAY 16TH. It's been a nice change of pace to wake up to fresh snow on the ground the last couple mornings, but it's looking like we'll have some warmer weather moving back in tomorrow through the weekend.  We've been getting a lot of calls recently asking about the status of the road down to the inlet of Quake as well [...]

Fishing Report for November 20th, 2014

Madison River Dam: 822 cfs Kirby: 914 cfs It was nice not to have to worry about ice in the guides yesterday, as air temperatures climbed above freezing for the first time in over 10 days.  Despite the cold water temps, we are still getting good fish on streamers both in the wade section and between the lakes.  We have been slowing down our retrieves to more of a slow jig, and the eats on the drop have actually been fairly light, so set the hook if you feel anything even close to tension at the end of your line. [...]

Fishing Report for October 28th, 2014

Madison River Dam: 851 cfs Kirby: 959 cfs Varney: 1,180 cfs Well it had it happen sooner or later, but true Fall temperatures have finally descended upon the Madison Valley.  This seems to have only helped the bite over the last week, and the Upper Madison has been fishing well on all fronts.  Nymph rigs are still the way to go for numbers, and Pat's Rubber legs, Midges, Baetis nymph/emergers, and small serendipities have all been producing under the indicator.  On most afternoons you can still encounter a fairly decent BWO hatch throughout the upper river, and the emergence seems [...]

Fishing Report for October 20th, 2014

Madison River Dam: 861 cfs Kirby: 948 cfs Varney: 1,160 cfs Fishing has been good on the Upper Madison this week, as we continue to bask in the incredibly warm October weather.  Midges and Baetis nymphs are still producing most of the action below the surface, and we are seeing quite a few BWOs emerging anytime between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm.  As far as the tug is concerned, streamer fishing has been excellent in some sections and a lot tougher in others...The action between the lakes and from Palisades to McAtee has been pretty slow, but the bite below [...]

Fishing Report for October 12th, 2014

Madison River Dam: 880 cfs Kirby: 1,030 cfs Varney: 1,230 cfs The weather patterns have been unseasonably warm for this little corner of the World, with highs in the mid-sixties to low-seventies over the last couple of weeks.  We have finally started to see our larger Fall Baetis (#20's) emerging this week, which has been taking place anytime between noon and 1:30 p.m. depending on the day.  Nymph fishing continues to be your best option for numbers right now, and some of our favorite Fall patterns in the wade section are  Kelly's BWO nymph in #18-20, Hogan's S&M Nymph in [...]

Fishing Report for May 25th, 2004

Madison River Dam: 1,820 cfs Hebgen: 2,700 cfs Varney: 4,050 cfs The Upper Madison is still on the rise, but the sub-surface fishing has been incredible.  All the creeks are kicking in mud, and Cabin and Beaver have been putting in enough to turn Quake Lake into a bucket of Hershey's Syrup for the time being.  The visibility out back was roughly 8-10" this morning, but we are guessing that it will be cut in half by Tuesday at the latest.  That being said, the streamer fishing as well as the nymphing continue to impress even the most suspicious anglers...just [...]

The Upper Madison is still fishing very well both between the lakes and below McAtee Bridge.  I wouldn't call it as red hot as what we experienced during the month of April, but it is still one of [...]

While the majority of SW Montana continues to flip-flop between Spring and full on Winter conditions, the Upper Madison has been fishing well between the lakes and between Varney and 8 Mile.  The Ennis boat ramp is still a ways [...]
